Masthead design + lOGO

I firstly chose a design i could create on Photoshop on a website, i used a tutorial on how to make a gel style text type, by following the steps i eventually made text that i thought i could use for my magazine cover.

These are a few designs that i made, i changed the colour, font and layout to find my perfect masthead design.

This is my favorite design so far(below) , it is very likely that this will be my final design.  The colours were influenced by my questionnaire  results had shown that light colours were preferred over darker ones, this suggests that this would appeal to a larger amount of people.

I have designed a logo that uses synergy and follows my house style.

They are the same colours as my masthead will be. it also symbolizes music, such as the volume icon. It was originally designed like this:

This suggests that the music is being turned down, which is not what i want my magazine to represent and suggest.

Survey Monkey questionaire

My questionnaire results showed me why a  magazine appeals to them and the sort of magazine they buy.

-My survey results showed that 73% of people rarely buy magazines.
-Over 50% have bought a music magazine
-Over 85% enjoy most of the top 40
-The majority of people said they found the main image most appealing thing on a front cover.
-Pop showed to be the most popular genre of music.
-My results showed that price did not really matter
-55% of people prefer their magazine to come out monthly.
-The majority of people prefer light colours to dark colours.

Name of magazine and genre of magazine

The genre of my magazine will be new music, music that is in the top 40, this would generally be pop music, artists such as Avvici, Daft Punk and Jessie J, i will not be including  artists such as Justin Bieber and Myley Cyrus, this is because my target audience typically do not like these artists, they are targeted at  a much younger age group.

I will be targeting my magazine at  females aged 18-25, i have decided to target females because i understand that market better, this is because i know what is appealing to women seeing as i am one.
I also feel that to appeal to the male audience i would have to include a picture on the main page that could be seen as inappropriate, this is because i would be following conventions of a magazine, and to include an inappropriate image of a women on the front page of the magazine is appealing to men, and most magazines that are targeted at men have this included.

The name for my magazine will be called Top Chart, it suggests that it will be focusing on the genre of mainstream music and music that will be included in the top 40, people who are interested in mainstream music will instantly appeal to my magazine this is because straight away by just reading the masthead they know it is the music they enjoy and love.  I am also appealing to the majority of music lovers, this is because for music to get into the top 40 they have to be bought, downloaded or listened to, this way i know that already the majority of people like the music.

Mood Board

This moodboard has given me inspiration to help me create and design my magzine cover, it has helped me understand my genre and target market.

Existing music magazines, and popular genres etc.

These are some popular music magazines that i have found, they are all diffrent genres, i found that a popular genre for a music magazine is mainstream music or indie music, the mainstream music appeals to alot more people, however the indie which is just as populkar appeals to a much smaller amount of people, but their audience really enjoys music and has a real pashion for it.

Q and Kerrang music magazine is both owened by the Bauer media instituition.
Top of the pops and Music is owned by the BBC publishers,
Vibe has a circulation of 301,000 and they own themselves.

3 contents music magazine analysis

Mojo contents page:
Use of Synergy:
The same colours would eb used on the front cover as well as the contents page, the masthead used on the magazine cover is also used on the contents page.

It is very simplistic contents page, with very little page numbers articles wrote down only the main articles are shown on the contents page, this suggests that the audience for this magazine are the type of people that want to get straight to the point, this suggests that they are busy, students for example, or a busy business worker, this suggests that their readers are highly educated and are smart.

Although this contents page is only from last years August issue, the iconography of the page suggests  that it has a theme or genre of old fashion, this is becasue of the pictures, some are black and white. The paper is even tinted yellow/brown, this in itself is a use iconography, this is because paper that looks tinted is commonly associated wiht an old fashion aspect.

The famous Kermit the frog, a very well known puppet who has been around for many years is featured in a picture on the contents page, this is use of interextuality, this is because he is from something else, originally a childrens tv programe and it has been used in the contents page, many of the readers will be familar with kermit and there is a good chance that they grew up watching the programme, this suggests what the age of the magazines target market it.

Q Contents page
This is very diffrent to the Mojo contents page, however it still uses the use of synergy, for example, the colour pallete, red and white.  It is layed out in a very simplistic way, very organised and neat, this sugests that the magazine will be  in the same format, very imformal articles that are very interlectual.

NME

This is a little busy than the previous magazine contents page, bright colours that relate to the front cover is the use of Synergy, it is very eye catching that suggests their target auidience are young people that can get excited and easly drawn to bright colourful articles.

Snoop Dog Analysis of front cover, conventions

Scratch magazine analyssis Codes and Convetions

LanguageWhat type of language is used?
Informal slang, Sentences are wrote as short possible, the main sell line is just lil Wayne's name, this suggests that his name is enough to sell the magazine.

How does this attract a particular audience? How does it present a particular social group?
A particular audience might find shortened sentence, and a  short amount of text to read appealing, this might be because they don't enjoy reading entertaining, and with very little text on the front cover, it suggests that the rest of the magazine will not include alot of text.  The slang suggests that young people, this is because young people, such teenagers, aged 16-20 are typically associated with slang, they would find this type of language appealing,  the target audience is males aged 16-23, they are a lower class, with poor education, not currently in education.

Colour Scheme
What colours are used?
Very dark colours are used, such as black, the majority of it is dark, but he words used on the page are either, white, blue or yellow, these 3 colours would be used throughout the magazine, this is use of synergy.

How does this attract a particular audience?
Men are associated with dark colours, this is because it reflects their mood, black connotes unhappiness in the sense of an opinion, they are also very simplistic colours that men might find more appealing it says alot about what the ,magazine will be, it suggests that the magazine is also simplistic.

How does this represent a particular social group?
A social group that could be appropriate for this magazine would be young males that are no longer in education, and from the colours used it suggests that they are overall quite a negative target audience, this is because black connotes unhappiness and negativity.

Images
Who is the main image?
Lil Wayne

What are they wearing?
He is wearing  a simple black jacket zipped up, this suggests that he is a simple minded person who is not effected by fashion, the target market can relate to this, this is because stereo typically young adults wear hoodies and they can feel that they have somthing in common with the magazine, they might also feel that they have a relationship with the rapper.

How are they posing?
The main person on the magazine has a relaxed pose, this suggests that he is layed back, that suggests that he doesn't care about the rules, it also could imply that he is rebellious and lazy.  His facial expression also suggests that he doesn't care, it is unconventional to have a negative facial expression the front page, this is because it reflects on the rest of the magazine, making the reader think that this is the type of magazine that will follow this negative feeling throughout the magazine.

What is their mode of address?
The larger image of Lil Wayne includes a direct mode of address, it makes the audience feel that he is looking straight at them and directly looking and communication with them, this is a good technique to use while taking the cover photos, this is because it suggests that the magazine will be personal about the model, and fans would eb intrested in that aspect  because they want to know personal details about them.
The smaller image is of a man who might be looking directly at you, however because of his shades it is unclear, this creates a sense of mystery and it is unclear what his artcile will include, this might want the redear want to know more because it is intriguing.

How does this present a particular social group?
Fans of the artists will find direct mode of adress appealing becasue they might think it could be more personal about the people they follow as fans.

Any otehr images?
There are only two images that are on the main cover, this suggests that they are important as they are the feature of the whole front cover.  Lil waynes picture is larger than the other artist, this suggests that Lil Wayne is more importnat.

Font typesHow has the font been presented?
The font is very simplistic, this sugegsts that the target audiece follows the same features, very simple minded and don't want to do an awful lot of reading, this suggets that they are uneducated or no longer in education.

3 Music Magazines analysis

Masthead:
The masthead is the sybolic colour red, which Q magazine uses every issue, it is reconisable and sybolic, the red connotes that this magazine is loud and outspoked, which highlights the fact that it is a music magazine which indicates that it includes articles about music artists who are diffrent and perhaps outspoken.

Puff:
The puff is bright yellow, this is a constrasting colour agaisnt the background and it stands out, this is so that it can easly be seen, this is important, because it has vital information on i thtat will be very appealing to the reader, it hopefully draw them in to the magazine and pursuade them to buy it.

Headline:
The headline in bright pink is a type oof font that looks like hand written, this makes the redear think that that certain feature of the magazine will be personal to that artist, giving them personal information to teh reader.

Banner:
The top banner is bright and colourful, it stands out from the background allowing it to be noticable, it will draw the reader in to the magazine pursuading them that this magazine includes and features lots of inforamtion that they need.

main image:
The main image is of a famous artist, it is the main feture on this front cover, the girl looks flawlesss, with a white dress indicating that she is perfect, this is because white connnotes perfection she is aslo wearing a tiara, that suggests that she high class and perhaps thinks alot of herself., her hair is not out of place and has obviously been styled for the photo shoot, this suggests that this artist is a classy artist that has respectable music and cares about her image. However the red dripos down her face suggest that it is blood, this shows the redear that perhaps this artist has a dark side, it is intgeeing, and the magazine editors would have of hoped that the redears would want to know more about the artist and why she is bleeding.

Masthead:
Bold bright colourful, pink suggests that this magazine is targeted at females, this becasue that colour is accosiated with girls.  The name Top of The Pops suggests that the magazine features music, which is pops, which indicates and suggests what genre of music this magazine will be focusing on.

Banner/puff
The banner stands out from the background, it is bright pink, and it makes the audience draw attention to it, which then persuades them to purchase the magazine because the information on it will be something that their target market would be interested in.

Main Image
Britney Spears is a female singer who appears young, this would draw the research in because they know that they might be-able to relate to this magazine, and the articles are relevant to themselves.

Direct Mode of address
This makes it more personal between the reader and the magazine, and they can feel that this magazine will be personal and that Britney is looking at them, and the articles will be addressed to themselves, making it seem that they have a relationship with the artist.

Mock up college magazine with analyse

My mock up for my college magazine was a quick draft, however it does show the main concepts and features i want my magazine to include.

My mock up for my magazine contents page was also a quick dreft, but likme magazine cover, it follows conventions of a magazine contents page.

Quark express training

I like quark express, i feel that by using you can get a pofetioanl look, it is easyier to use htan using any publisher documnet, i think that using just photoshop would be very difficult.  I prefer using layers, this way i can easly organise my layering, i found it quite simular to PhotoShop.  I will definatley use this proggrame to create my magazine cover, i used the training booklet to learn about the programme.

Final college magazine and contents

I like my magazine front page, this is because most of it has a professional look, for example the puff, the banner and the masthead.  My magazine follows conventions of a magazine front page.

It could be improved by editing the font, it is not a conventional font used for magazine covers, if changed it could improve the professional look.

I like my contents page, it looks more professional than my front cover, i think this is because i chose the right font type, the picture goes colour scyme, this is a professional look, it also follows conventions of a magazine contents page.

3 magazine comnparisan

Sugar magazine
Masthead-
Sugar conotes that it is sweet, this can be symbolicto females, being sweet, this suggests that it is targeted towards females, the font is easy readableand simple,bu tbig, this is so that it it easy reconisable.

Images-
Anne Hathaway is the main image this suggests that it is targeted towards females aged 19-28 this is because that it is the age that would be intreseted in her, the picture looksas if it has been profetionallytake from ared carpet, this suggests that Sugar did nothave permission to use this photo, therefore the information would have of come second hand, not by Hathaway her self.  This sugessts this magazine is a gossip magazine.

The other images include, fashion, this sugeeststhat it is saimed atwomen who are intrested in fashion.  It also yhas some prices of fashion products, these are products fromthe high streetatlowprices, this suggeststhat the target market for Sugar are females with low income.

Colour-
The strongest colour is pink, it is used throughout the front cover, this suggests that the readers of sugar are females, this is because stereo typically wommen are attracted to pink and are accosiated with it.

Elle Magazine
Masthead-
The mastehead is bold, the streched look connotes slim, which could suggest a model, this is good for Elle's image because it is a fashion magazine that within it inclues a lot of models.  The silver conntoes class and luxury, this is because silver is a colour typically thought of being expensive and classy.

Images-
Jenifer Lopez is a music start (singer) who is liked by mainly females ages 23-30, this sugeests the typeo f readers that Elle is targetting.  Tyhe one picture is the main focus on this page, this suggests that Jenifer Lopez is an important person, espically wiuth her stanze, she looks strong powerful and bold, thios is because Elle have photographed her in a studio, this sugessts that elle have a lot of money, which suggests that the price of the magazine is high.

Colour-
The colours used are whites and silvers, these colours aree conoted with class and has an expensive feel, this sugests the target market of this magazine, their customers are suggested to be in the higher class, earn a high amount of money.

Top Teen
Masthead-
The masthead is a main feature on the cover, it is big and bold, this is so it stands out from the others on the stand, the curvy font suggests that the target market is girls, top teen suggests that this magazine is for teenagers who want to be the best, the yellow love hearts sugest that young girl read this magazine, this is because typically young girls like hearts, they are intrested in love and relatioships.
Image-
Selena Gomez is the main feture of this magazine, this suggests that young girls read this magazine this is becasue  Selena Gomez is from a disney programme and she went out with Justin Bieber, these things are typically related to young girls.

Colour-
The colours suggest that it is targeted for girls, this is because of the amount of pink used, pink is a very stereotypicall colour to represent girls, and they are attracted to it.

Comparisan
-The colours suggest diffrent target audiences
-Mastheads suggest magazines are diffrent genres
-Main image suggest diffrent target audience

Prezi evaluation

Task 1-comparising of 2 college magazines

Comparison of Garth hill College magazine and Rambler magazine.

Garth Hill College magazine features:

Masthead, bar code, banner, date, main image, smaller images, left hand third,  Headlines, pull quote.

Garth Hill College masthead is very different from the Rambler masthead, GHC (Garth Hill College) is all the same colour and it is a simple masthead that explains what the magazine is going to be about. The blue connotes cleanliness suggesting that this magazine will be appropriate for all ages, aka no rude language.

Rambler doesn't really suggest alot, it gives no clue of what the contents of the magazine will include, unlike GHC which suggests that it is about Education.

The banner on GHC looks professional, it gives relevant information about the contents of the magazine, Rambler does not have a banner.

GHC date is visible which allows the readers to know which issue is which. Rambler does not include a date, this is not professional, and it therefore means that GHC looks alot more professional.

GHC includes a left hand third, this is a professional look, it includes relevant headlines indicating what the magazine will include and feature.  Rambler magazine does not include a left hand third, this unprofessional and it does not give a clear indication of what the magazine will include.

The main image on GHC connotes that thie magazine is for people who are interested in there work and want to work hard, unlike rambler which the main image which is out of focus and has been badly photoshopped, this is not professional and it ia s bad llok for a magazine. the picture also suggests nothing about the contents of the magazine.

The Pull quate from GHC magazine has relevance to the picture and it also suggests what the contents might be of the magazine.  Unlike Rambler which has a quote suggesting not a great detail of what the magazine will feature or include.

The colours used in GHC is all colour coded, keeping to mainly blue and orange which are positive colours which suggests that this magazine is going to be positive towards education. rambler bright blue colour choice suggest that the magazine contents will be alarming and daring, however it is a bad choice of colour because it does not suggest that it is a school/college magazine.

Overall, the GHC magazine is a much higher quality than the rambler magazine and i think this because there are many missing gaps in the rambler magazine, it looks unfinished and rushed, this i s not a professional look, also many important features are missing such as the date.

Rambler magazine features:
Masthead, headlines, pull quote, main image, bar code
